Collection Agency

I am in the process of cleaning up my credit. I offered
to settle with a collection agency on two of my very
old delinquent accounts since they had them in their
possession. They stated that they would report the
accounts as being paid if full and closed. These accounts
date back to 1991 and they just kept on being transfered
to different collection agencies. After I pay off the
accounts, can I then have them removed because of statute
of limitation time on the debt has expired? And what
about the original creditor (Mongtomery Wards) who
transfered the account to collections will they also be
removed? One of the accounts was only reported with one
credit agency as current and in good standing since 1991.
I still negotiated a settlement price to keep this from
hunting me in the future.
