Write to the
credit bureaus, and dispute the item.
Be sure to include photocopies of documentation, such as the official court listing of which debts were discharged.
Even if the collection
agency has bought the debt,
they are still apparantly covered by the Fair
Debt
Collection Practices Act. This gives you the right
to dispute the validity of the debt, (by writing
to the collection
agency) and they must confirm it.
I recommend *only* dealing with them in writing, *not* on the phone. Include copies of docmentation. You can also file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission. They do *not* get involved with individual cases, but they may take action if this agency is consistantly engaging in abuses like this. The relevant state Attorney General's offices may also be a good place to complain to. Include a copy of your governemental complaints with any correspondance that you send to the collection agency, to get their attention, and let them know you are serious.
Additional information can be found in the Credit
Problems and Credit
Laws sections.
Good Luck.
