Duplicated Items on Credit Report

I have a question about duplicated items on a credit
report
. I have 3 old accounts that went to collection
4-6 years ago, and 2 of these have since been paid off.
On my credit reports, both the original creditor *and*
the collection agency for the debt are listed as separate
items for each of these 3 original accounts. Therefore,
there are 6 items on my report for what was only 3 accounts
to begin with. My question is, must the credit reporting
agencies
combine these into single items? The reporting
agencies have told me that both the original account
and the collection account must each have their own
separate entries until the 7 year limit is up. They
refuse to delete the "original" item, all they will do
is change the balance on the original item to zero, and
notate that the account has been transferred or sold.
Then they show the collection account item with the
current balance and the same date of last activity as
the original item. I would really appreciate any advice
that you could give. Thanks.
