Does a Business have a time limit to dispute charges?

I just received a phone call from a merchant I purchased
merchandise from in 11/99. They claim that there is a
small balance owed on merchandise I ordered and charged.
This is 6 months later...Is there a statute of limitations
on them reporting or requesting a claim like this?
I would sure appreciate some input...this seems a bit
ridiculous to me especially in light of the fact that
I do not know one business that would ship items
without first receiving approval from the credit card
being used.
