Statute of Limitations

I had a credit card debt of $2200 with the last payment
on 15 August 1996. I haven't heard anything about it
for a few years now but a collection agency called
trying to collect the debt for $0.50 on the $1. They
threatened to take legal action if I did not make
arrangements. I live in the State of Geogia which has
a statue of limitations of 4 years. Question 1: Does
this mean that after 15 August 2000 they can no longer
file suit against me or can they file suit through
15 February 2001? Question 2: Is there anything that I
can do to prevent them from filing suit against me in
the mean time besides paying them the requested amount?
