Received letter from attorney

Just received a letter from an attorney about an account that is past due. Heard nothing from original creditor in almost 1 year. Letter is an "attempt to collect a debt" letter which gives me 30 days to respond and then they will recommend to OC to file a lawsuit. What should I do. The account has been sold a couple of times in the past but acording to my credit report, the SOL is not out until 6 months.
