How Important is the"Report Date" on Credit File?

I've posted on this board before in regards to disputing a charge-off auto repossession in 1996 (the date is incorrect the repossession was 1999). I was advised to dispute it as "not mine" to the credit bureaus, but someone had mentioned to me that saying the repo is "not mine" might "FLAG" my credit file. I live in Missouri and I have never had a judgement against me. My main concern is the "REPORT DATE" on my credit file with all 3 credit bureaus which is March 2002. Would it be wise to still dispute this as "not mine" because of the fairly recent report date? I did have an auto repossession with The Money Store, but they sold the account to Wachovia Bank. Wachovia is saying that do not have any records of the repossession when I call their 800#. I'm thinking if I try and dispute the repo, I could be track down and the correct repo date would be reported and I would have to wait 2006 instead of 2003 for repo to come off my credit file. I'm trying to get an auto loan with the credit union, but because of this derogatory remark on my credit file, my application was denied. My FICO socre right now is 648.

Thanks for responding.

Sharon
