This ones got me really baffled.....I regularly get reports from Equifax and always print out a copy to have, as well as on-line access. One of the more glaring errors on my report was my incorrect DOB (off by 2 days). I have never contacted Equifax in any way, other than to order my reports. Well, I go to check details on my Equifax reports tonight and I'll be darned if my birthdate hadn't changed. Now, that's not a big deal, I know--they corrected my birthdate. BUT, they corrected it on every report that I had ordered from them in the PAST. I'm looking at my printouts of the SAME reports from the SAME dates (past) and my birthdate is listed as 11/02. Today, the online versions of those SAME DATED reports have ALL been changed to 11/04 (correct birthdate).
So maybe this is a stupid question, but how on earth can they legally do that? Seemingly they have gone and erased the error from ALL of their records, as if it never existed. If they can do this with a birthdate, is there any limit to what they can do?? This raises some really frightening questions, IMHO. If you are not fully armed with complete printouts of your reports and you have to pursue legal action against one of the CRA's (EQ), perhaps they can make a slight 'retroactive' adjustment to take care of that as well!? I know, I'm overly paranoid now--but I don't like the way this smells one bit. If this is legal, they have the power to make your report, past and present, say exactly what they want/need it to.:-(
(Don't get me wrong, I wanted my correct birthdate on my report, I was just waiting to dispute that along with about 10 other incorrect entries in my personal information section) I've recently sent out 2 validation letters, so I was expecting to see some 'activity' on my credit reports--but not 'retro'activity! EQ only made that 1 change, though--no inquiries, no disputes listed, etc. He**, I'm paying them to notify me ANY time my report changes or ANY time anyone accesses it (so they say)--now they've changed it and I have no way of ever knowing how or why.....uuuggghhh, they make me ill.
Sorry for the rambling vent....any comments, similar experiences, suggestions??
