validation letter

Please excuse me for being naive, but I'm guessing that from reading these posts, I'm not clear on exactly what a validation letter is! I had recieved a letter from Midland(I've seen a website that has them on the crook list))Oct.2001 stating the ridiculous amount I owed. The original amount I know is approx $970, they want nearly $3000! I had stopped paying in Oct 1999. I sent a "validation" letter nov. 2001 in which I had disputed the amount, and told my life story(like they care!). The only thing I recieved back was basically a repeat of the first letter with a little more tacked on the amount. Nothing else. Should I have recieved a print-out stating the description of the charges??
