First off, I really do have to stick up for WhyChat. He has helped a lot of people who are in desperate need of some advice...he has given us some hope that maybe we can make things better in our lives. And I don't mean by avoiding paying things we owe. A lot of people really get in over their head, and then they face some unforseen problem like unemployment or medical problems. They get behind on their bills, credit cards, house payments etc. Now, when they recover, they still have to catch up the bills to keep them with a roof over their head. While doing this, they can't afford to pay that Collection agency that won't stop bugging them. The one that is threatening to sue and take away 25 percent of their wages...wages that are just getting them by to stay alive with a roof over their heads.

Then, we get a call from some guy at a collection agency that immediately starts badgering and threatening you. Calling you a liar and a theif (Don't say it don't happen, because almost ever CA I have talked to has pulled these lines on me). Most CA agents I have heard from are rude, crass, non understanding and downright abusive. I have never had one come out and say, "Hey you owe this five hundred dollars, I was calling to see if we could work a payment plan out" No, they tack on huge fees and demand huge amounts of money that some of us can't even dream of paying.

You say that it makes you feel better to pay the CA for the past bill you may owe. Well, you are not doing much with regards to paying back the original creditor if this agency has already bought the debt on pennies on the dollar. I refuse to pay a CA, I will only pay the original creditor, and if they got rid of evidence of my file, then so be it, that is their problem. If they wanted my money they should have kept that information on some type of computer. As far as I am concerned the CA purchased this debt for pennies on a dollars, it was their choice to do it, knowing full well they may never collect. And I don't owe them nothing...I only owe the original creditor. If I do owe the CA anything, then I would like to know how much they bought the debt for, and maybe then I would owe them what they paid for the debt...but none have ever provided me with such information or even proof that they actually did purchase the debt from the original creditor.

So, if you want to be on your moral high horse, then so be it. Obviously if you can afford to pay your debts, then you are doing well financially. If I was doing well financially, then I would pay off some more past debt, but the point is, I am not and money don't grow on trees. And my mortgage, medication copays, food, utilities and car expenses come first.
