At least one year ago, my Sears account was charged off. I've been contacted by a company called Portfolio Recovery Associates and told they bought the debt and I now owe them. Does PRA have any legal standing--do I owe them, or Sears? I do want to pay this debt, but it seems to me that if I pay PRA rather than Sears, I will STILL owe Sears and that will not help my credit any. If I don't owe PRA, what steps should I take to get them to stop bothering me? I'm tempted to just send the payment to Sears and tell PRA to collect from them, but that probably would only create a bigger problem.

The total debt is less than $500. I live in Michigan.

Thanks!
