1 in Collections, 2 Closed...Should I Go to a Debt Consolidation Program?

I'm in CA and my credit has become shot in the past year. One of my credit card account has been sent to law firm to collect and two other accounts are now closed after being over 60 days delinquent. Should I join a debt consolidation program? Can you suggest any? What are the negative aspects of joining such a program? Will the account that has gone to collections work with the debt consolidation program? I'm severely stressed and would greatly appreciate any advice you may have. Thanks
