Anyone ever refinanced or got a home equity loan?

Has anyone here ever refinanced or taken out a home equity loan or line of credit to pay off their credit cards? My dh and I are thinking of doing just that. We have enough equity to pay off our cards but since our credit is a little shaky we may have trouble getting a loan. By shaky I mean some late pymts but no judgements, etc. We live in a very small town and would like to protect our privacy. Has anybody ever tried Lending Tree or can anybody recommend a place where we might be able to get a home equity loan? We are afraid of getting hooked up with a fly-by-night outfit if we can't do it locally. Thanks.
