I posted earlier about a delinquent credit card account I have through Household (the GM Card). I'd sent Household a check last week for five thousand dollars to pay down the due balance of $7500. An attorney bill collector has been hounding me in the meantime.

Today, I sent Mister Lawyer a cease and desist letter and Household a letter outlining the situation, with my expressed desire to pay off the debt as soon as I can, TO THEM. Both were sent return reciept and the letter to the atty was unsigned, as I was instructed here.

The lawyer has my e-mail address. I contacted him by e-mail today to tell him that Household cashed the check and to expect a formal communication from me. He wrote back and said that Household doesn't owe the debt- his client, a collection outfit called CACV does. Tug of war? Or smoke and mirrors?

I called Household about an hour ago. They did charge off the account, but accepted the payment. The customer service rep says that my account was not sold. My letter is on the way to them, so I am sure I will get some verification of this in writing. I also contacted my bank and they are sending a copy of the cancelled check for my records.

So now, hopefully with little further fuss, I will work out a payment plan to finish off my obligation to Household. It's a charge-off, but it will be paid in full. Better than a judgement.

Meanwhile, lawyer-collector says he will arrange to have payment transferred to "his client". Why Chat, you are right. These guys are pulling out all the stops! But all will work out in the end.

Folks, lessons here:
- Get educated about your credit. Check your credit report often.
- If you fall behind, call your creditor before the account goes to one of these sharks.
- Keep records! One credit counselor told me 15 years at a minimum.
- Never give your credit card or checking account number over the phone to anyone. (I did not do this, thankfully)
- Get everything in WRITING.
