Nine days shy of my new jobs health insurance kicking in........someone ran a red light and hit me. I had approximately 20,000.00 in medical bills. A company who handles collection of accounts for a county hospital sent me a bill, handwritten, adding on approximately 20,000.00 more in 'surcharges'. I wrote back to them asking for explanation of these surcharges. For 1 1/2 years, I never heard from them. All of a sudden, they called me demanding payment. I explained that my question of these mysterious charges had never been explained. Very quickly, this thing has escalated into a collection situation. No one, will explain, or even be civil to me. What do you suggest? Is there a statute on this kind of debt. How do I get this explained. I have copies of the original bills from hospital, adding up to more than 20,000.00 less than they are demanding. It is bizarre..........any advice?????
