Honestly? you did settle for less than the full amount, and they did charge off the amount that you didn't pay. What they are reporting is correct. This is what people don't tell you when they tell you to settle. Knowing JCPenney, they will verify every time. I don't think you have a snowball's chance in H*** of getting this off, at least, not in the near future.

For now, be grateful they haven't sold the charged-off balance to a collection agency, and concentrate on building good credit history to counteract it for a while.

Or, if you have the money to pay the charged-off amount, contact JCPenney and see what it would take to get this changed legitimately. Just ask them what it would take, don't make any offers. Do it all in writing.
