Paid rent moved out year later CA says I owe them money.

I moved out of my appartment paid all of my rent droped off the keys and gave them a forwarding address everything seemed fine. Then a year later a check a credit report on myself and find a collection account from a third party debt collection company. When I call they said that I din't pay all of my rent and I have to send them money. 1. I don't think I owe them money but I don't think I have any way to prove it. 2. I would pay it to make iy go away but I don't want a collection account listed on my credit report (payed or unpayed). Is there anything I can do or do I get screwed anytime someone says I owe them money?????
