Is it better to carry a balance or pay in full each month?

I am rebuilding my credit after bankruptcy using an American Express card. I have the option of carrying a balance with this card. Is it better, in terms of credit score, to carry a small balance from month to month, or to pay it in full each month? If I should carry a balance, how much? Thank you for your help.
