Update from prior posting 7/12: I called the court & there is a case against me. I ran my credit report & found the CC & balance of $4369. I called the attorney's office (well attorney, he answered the phone) & asked to work around going to court. He said the total i was being sued for was $12,000+(total cost), but he'd settle for $9,000 in a lump sum & to call him back before the court date if that's what i want. First of all, i don't have $9,000. I don't even know if I could borrow it. Should i try to takle the deaL? I do work(part time) as a nurse & i figure they would garnish my wages if i go to court(Tennessee). I don't own a home(I rent) but I do own a car(it's a 1994 that might be worth about $6,000 at the most). Could they take my car if i go to court even if I'm not the only name on the title? I don't have anything else of value & I am single. Secondly, even if i borrowed the money then i'd owe someone else & still have to pay interest on that $9,000. But at least i wouldn't have a court judgement against me. Would it be better to hire a lawyer to help me? My court date is over a month away. I really need some advice. I am totally clueless to all this legal stuff. Thanks for your time.
