I had the same thing happen to me a couple of months ago...same firm, Providian as well. The 'extra' amount in question is probably interest, that's what it was in my case (they gouged me). What I did, was I sent them a letter with five post-dated checks. I explained that I could not pay the full amount up-front, and they could choose to accept my terms, or make things difficult. They accepted, and sent me a statement, which basically showed that a large amount that was charged was interest. The only thing that happened after the fact, and made me furious...is that the initial warrant in debt, listed one amount due...they took my 5 checks, cashed them on time, etc (they totaled the amount listed on the warrant in debt). Then last week I get a nasty letter that I haven't sent them my payments per our agreeement! Turns out they wanted another $85 in interest!! I sent them a check, and told them the case was close and demanded they send me a receipt for 'payment in full'
