Here's a story about something similar. When reading the posts that challenge this guy, be sure to read the entire thread (it's long). Incidentally, I blieved the guy right off the bat. It is not the first story like this I have heard about AmEx doing this when people pay up, even after they don't have to.

Needless to say, you are putting yourself in some jeopardy to pay a debt after it has been charged off and sold, but apparently AmEx values the integrity of the individual who does this type of thing, and although I know they never promise to delete, they do and they actually give people another account afterwards. I have heard enough similar stories to believe that all this is true.

It's not my personal experience, since consumer debt was never part of my problem - mine was all medical bills, so I am just passing along info I have gleaned from others.
