Summons with notice

My husband rec'd a summons from an debt collector on behalf of Portfolio Recovery. It's for a credit card he had with Fleet bank. He stopped making payments on the balance in 1997 at which time he owed $2375. The summons says he now owes $4619.32. What happens to us if we can't pay it and is it too late to try and work something out? Is there a certain percentage that they will accept?
