I am a postal clerk. You will want to use certified mail. Registered mail is for expensive items, items that cannot be replaced, or things such as negotiable bonds. Registered mail is much more expensive because it is kept under lock and key and every person who handles it, signs for it. Certified mail goes with the class of mail you paid for (First Class or Priorty). A return receipt is optional for either certified or registered. It is an additional cost of $1.75. When the addressee or agent sign for the item, on the yellow form (which is kept and scanned signature included) for the post office, they will sign again if you request a return receipt. If you don't pay for a return receipt and then later need to get a verification that it was received, don't worry. You can pay for one after the fact. It will cost you more, $3.25. Remember the little yellow paper you signed for the Post Office, well, once it is scanned and downloaded, we can retrieve the signature via our intranet. So if it gets expensive sending alot of certifieds with return receipts, you can do without the return receipts, and if you when and if you need a signature, just get that particular one and pay for it.
