Can they do that? I paid the final bill which was the FULL balance listed on the bill. It was 1 1/2 month after the date printed on the letter threatening to charge off the account, since I had moved across the country and the mail wasn't forwarding properly. Well I find out last month that during that 1 1/2 month they tacked on $400 in interest and late fees, before cashing my check. The amount is now $1100 and they claim to have sent it to two collection agents, neither of which have contacted me. I only found out by getting a copy of my credit report. Is it legal for a credit card company to keep adding charges and late fees on an account that they have LONG AGO since charged off? HELP! Citibank reps were the most rude I have ever encountered in my life. The woman I spoke to told me that if I didn't pay over the phone right then, they were going to keep adding fees "until the end of time" I asked them to give me something in writing that says "if you pay this amount by XX date, your account will be at $0 and you will not owe citibank anything further" SHE REFUSED. She said they can only send out letters AFTER I send them money. I was dealing directly with citibank. Not a collection agency. I verified this. The number I called was listed on citibanks website. Am I being scammed? Do I have any rights?
