It can get nasty but, it all depends on what your state allows. For example, does your state allow wage garnishment? As a general rule, they will probably be able to get a lein against your house and car. They can raid your bank account unless, you have funds deposited that are exempt. If the acount is joint, it'll be tougher but not insurmountable.

How old is the debt? Have you been served? Just need more facts.
