The SOL is california is only 4 years on a credit card. Of course, I have no clue where you lived at the time you ran up the debt but the SOL is probably up no matter where you used to live. They cannot sell it and report it for another 7 years. To do so is extremely illegal and if it happens make sure you have something in writing whether it is a bill from them or your credit report that shows the chargeoff from 1996. If they reage it simply send them a 48 intent to sue and make sure you check up the exact statute of the FCRA they violated. Then you take them to court if they ignore you. It almost all cases you will get a whiney little attorney who will seek to settle. What you do them is up to you.
