Checking credit report -- WhyChat, Linda, Anyone with Experience

When you are checking your own credit report, how often can you do that without creating a situation for yourself? I checked mine with the 3 major CRAs in June. Do they all offer inquiry notification? From what I was seeing online it looked like only one did. There is some information over 10 years old and quite stale that I'd like to clear up, to send letter 1st and then check reports after replies. Thanks in advance for your usual excellent advice.
