Its just an inside joke amongst my friends and I.

We all incurred substantial student loan debts by going to law school, in some cases requiring repayments of $1000 a month or more. Throw that on top of a mortgage or rent, as well as all the other usual expenses, and you can see how a young attorney can easily be "poor" even with a decent income. (Just subtract 12k from your annual salary and see the effect.)

We also jokingly use it in the sense of "not a good" lawyer. Senior partners continually call us "boneheaded rookies" even though we are usually the ones bailing their butts out of trouble because they haven't bothered to look at the law in 15 years. In that sense, we are "poor" lawyers, both financially and in quality.

All in all, its just a play on words. Don't take it to heart.

poor lawyer, Esq.
