They are trying to railroad you. They see female with 2 kids and think 'hey, we are gonna stress her out until she pays'. If the SOL is up they cannot win- period. all you need to do is show up and use the SOL as your defense. You do not have to give a sob story. they will just feed on that. I would definately countersue for a frivolous lawsuit. I would also sue for FDCPA 807(10)- the use of any false representation or deceptive means to collect or attempt to collect any debt or obtain information concerning a consumer. Since the debt is not legally collectable they are using deceptive practices to collect on it.
