I don't think the collection agency is required to remove anything unless it's beyond the SOL. If you've paid a settlement to them then they still don't have to remove it unless you stated in your written agreement with them that you wanted it removed from your credit report in return for the settlement paid. If you're just making payments to a collection agency and it's not paid off then they're allowed by law to place a statement on your report. Some of the more experienced will give more details if I've left out anything.
