I am trying to negotiate a settlement with an attorney prior to answering a judgement. The debt is my husband's, and was originally a $200 limit Cap 1 card, which is now upward of about $1200. I called the attorney's office, Mann, Bracken, Layng, and Knezo, and asked what they would settle the account for, and told her I could afford $500, which is two and a half times what the original debt was. The principle is now about 850, with the rest being the accured interest and attny's fees. I felt $500 was fair, but she will not budge off of $725. Any ideas other than filing an answer for a hearing, which I am sure will really get them going and they probably won't settle for anything then, but I can't risk garnishment, which I know is the next step if they win judgement. Sorry for rambling, but I guess I need a quick lesson in negotiating. Aren't there restrictions on garnishment anyway?
