Question about credit and employment

Hi- I have less than stellar credit. I am paying off a charged off cc (to the oc), have paid off and closed a cc with several lates, and have paid off a car with several lates. I also have two perfect accounts; one paid off, and one in progress. I also just graduated from college at the ripe old age of 42 and would like to branch out from my former field. Unfortuately, many employers now want a credit report as part of the selection process. Am I basically screwed? Or am I going to be flipping burgers until this chargeoff and the other negative accounts leave my credit report? Any input would be great. I also want to thank those who helped me last month with questions about how to handle the chargeoff.
