... but the debt they contacted me about was indisputably mine.

Whenever you have ANY reason to believe that a debt is NOT YOURS, as is the case here, the proper action to take is to dispute the debt on that basis.

However, unless The Credit Store has changed its management style drastically, my experience with them is that they are uncommonly decent, helpful, and always delivered exactly what they promised whether it was a written statement or a verbal communication from a rep.

I have over the years had several offers from them, with nary so much as a audible groan on an offer I did not accept or even actively rejected. And no account that had to be sold because I rejected an offer lashed back instantly with a real or threatened lawsuit, the way CAMCO's alleged offer did per the excuse they gave me for filing or threatening to file suit.

Turning bad debt into AA credit is a bit like turning straw into gold, and one of the reasons these guys are good at it is that they cater to the actual "moral" market and don't abuse that market, in my experience.

And so, Ray, if it were a septigenarian debt that I didn't recognize as ever having been mine that surfaced at The Credit Store, what I would do is dispute the debt promptly in a nice friendly letter, and ask for assistance in either validating the debt or validating the dispute.

And I'd go further, a la: "It just seems very odd that suddenly, after absolutely nothing has ever arrived as bad news via the mail or in credit reports in more than a decade, that something like this should surface in this way. I have had my open account with XYZ Provider for N years, and frankly I do not remember ever having any other account with them, ever. Have you had many other items that go back further than almost anyone's records are retained coming in or being complained about? Naturally I am also concerned that this allegation of debt is circulating at all, under the circumstances. Short of paying a debt I truly dispute as my own, do you know of any way to remove it from the open market for uncollected debt?"

Questions are funny things. You never get answers to them unless you ask.
