You need to send in a validation letter to the collection agency. Most agencies these days buy the accounts and they can't be returned to the original creditor. Not sure about the previous, but a validation letter would help you find this out (whether it was assigned or purchased). If they don't validate it may also get this particular collector off of your back. Not to say another collection agency won't take up where they left off. Validate validate and never give then your checking number. Never make any agreements over the phone..ALWAYS in writing. Some will tell you they're sending it back as a bluff to get you to pay. More than likely if you don't have any assets and they don't feel they can collect on a law suit, it'll pretty much just ride itself out. If they did manage to sue and get a judgement against you, the cars you already have paid off may be subject to being sold to pay for the $6000 debt. That is provided they're in your name :)
