You are looking at a "per hour" billing charge from an attorney or firm. Depending on where you live, it should be anywhere from $100 to $250 an hour. The younger the attorney (i.e. less time that he or she has been an attorney) the cheaper it will be. For something like what you are looking for, you would want a younger associate than a seasoned veteran. The difference of $100 an hour in savings is worth it, don't you think? If hiring a firm, request that your attorney be an associate (for the cheaper rates).

It will also depend on how they track their billing. If it is in 15min increments, you could get a charge for 15mins on a 2 min phone call. Try to find a firm that does it by 0.1 increments (i.e 6 minutes) instead of 0.25 increments (15 mins).

I recently did a "demand letter" for a client. We knew we weren't going to be filing suit, but he wanted to give it a shot. I ended up charging them for 30mins of time writing and preparing the letter at $150 an hour...i.e. $75. Plus costs (in this case, the cost of mailing RRR).

That sounds expensive, but you would be surprised how fast people change there tone of voice when they find out they are dealing with an attorney. (I used to get a big kick out of telling the debt collection kids on the phone that I was a Prosecutor in *** County, which at the time I was. They instantly became infinitely more respectful.) Point being, sometimes it can be worth the extra money to achieve a quicker and/or more decisive result.
