Have I wasted a lot of effort?

I am in Alaska. We recently settled about 6 charged-off accounts to the tune of about $10,000. Did I totally waste my time settling these? They would not have dropped off my record for 5 more years. 1/2 of them said they would put settled in full on my CR. Should I write a certified RR letter stating for them to remove them from my credit report as I have suffered with the derogatory marks for a long time?
