Why chat-my last pay versus CC charge off

Im a California resident. Last payment on account 3-98. Have credit report from last year. Scheduled to come off 4-2005. Debt assigned in 1998 to a collection agency. Collection agency confirmed last pay on 3-98. They stated it wasnt charged off until 11-98. They stated that's when 4 year (SOL) started. Spoke with them today. They said they have until 11-2002 to sue me. Is this correct? My last payment was on 3-98. I never caught up. Does it go by when the company charges it off? or, my last pay. They said I was wrong and its when it was charged off.. This is confusing. please help. thanks tony
