"Are there reported cases where they are filing suit against someone using an address they know is invalid?"

NO. At least there is no evidence yet that extends beyond conjecture from just looking at the cases that were easiest to get full summaries to review.

That said, they certainly go about verifying whereabouts for service the hard way! They called my workplace demanding to speak with various managers to get the address of the company. Apart from display ads in several yellow page directories, I suppose it WOULD be hard to find the address the way you or I might start a search for a business address: holding the Information Operator hostage for the address before the call was switched to auto dial.

So they dialed and got the company phone answered. Why didn't they just call and ask whoever answered for the address?

Hmm, guess they can't, cause they are "bill collectors" and doing something sneaky like just asking might not look good -- yeah, sure, as if we could "just tell" whoever called from dozens of others every week who just call and ask.
