Spouse's CC Debt

I'll try to make this brief.
After a year and a half, I have finally gotten my husband diagnosed for all the mental problems he has been having.
The official diagnosis is Early Alsheimers (sp?)
He has run up an incredible CC debt, although I tried to stop him, by taking the cards, calling/writing the CC companies, informing them of his incompetence.
They refused to take action, as I was not the official holder of the card, and even in some cases increased his credit limit.
Now, because he hasn't worked in two years and all our "emergency savings" have been used to help him get medical treatment, I cannot pay the charges.
What can I do? The doctors, and legal aid reps. have told me, not to make it a priority, as I have enough to deal with, his illness, and taking care of basic neccessities.
I have never, been unable to pay my bills, have always had an excellent credit rating, and now I feel ashamed and guilty, even though I believe I did all that I could to prevent this from happening.
I am awaiting a court judgment, concerning his compentency, until then, there is little I can do to stop him.
Any help, suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you so much.
Nikki
