settling judgments

Do you need a lawyer to settle a judgment? Is it possible the creditor(it's 6 1/2 years old)would be willing to negotiate? Can it be negotiated? I know with recent changes in the law, it's possible I could be free of this by October '03, but I want to pay this(and maybe feel better about me). Thanks
