I was contacted today by a collection agency about a 13 year old Visa card debt (from 1989). It has long since dropped off of my credit report and I have only recently completely turned my credit rating around (where I was able to buy a new car, get credit cards with good APRs, etc...).

My question is how much longer will this old debt continue to follow me around, and although I realize that I am morally obligated to pay this debt, am I legally obligated? When I instructed the collection agent that I had no intention of paying on a 13 year old debt, he kept repeating over and over, "Why won't you pay it? Why won't you pay it?" I replied to him, "I've stated my intent," and hung up the phone. Incidentally, the debt started out as $1200.00 but with interest and penalties is now over $3000.00.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.
