Thanks Why Chat. I've been trying to find some way out of this mess and have learned a lot about debt collection from this board. They say a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing so I may ultimately be forced to settle with this company, but I've fought the good fight. This is an old debt that first went deliquent in 1995, but subsequent feeble attempts to make payments of $50 - $75 re-started the clock according to NYS interpretation. "SOL begins from the date of the last transaction on either side". That last transaction of $73 was early in 97.

FYI: This was a $5000 debt that I got down to about $1200 before I just gave up. It's now back up to $5000 with penalties, interest, fees, etc. An expensive lesson!!
