As a mother of three grad students, let me recommend something. Is there any College/University Credit Union on Campus? You should check them. My kids used them during undergrad, and using them now during grad years too. Usually this places are very friendly, helpful AND issuing (VISA or MASTERCARD) credit cards. They always accept every application from students with no credit history. The fees, apr much lower than any outsider bank would offer.
You mentioned that you have a credit card with your name on it. It is on your credit report. Banks are not interested whose name is on the check that pays every month the ballance.
As Why Chat mentioned: check your credit report, you will be surprised:-)

It is important: my experiences from 6 campuses, I cannot garantee that every campus has similar services, offers, but to check it?

And I agree, ONLY to improve your credit report you do not need to run to get a new card. I remember reading somewhere that 30%-40% of college student ruin their credit history during college years.

Good luck for your college years:-)
