Which collection agency does the lawyer represent?

Are you sure it is a lawyer who is involved? Some of the collection agencies out there are expert word-weasels.

How old is your credit card debt? The statute may have expired, and if you are sued anyway, the expired statute IS a defense, even if the collection agency says you have no defense. Check the Statute of Limitations for your state.

If a lawyer really is involved, get full information on the lawsuit. CAMCO, the collection agency that made my work life miserable for days, was threatening to sue me in Georgia, which would have been illegal because I have never lived in Georgia or anywhere except California. When I said rats, guess I will have to start looking for a lawyer in Georgia, I was advised not to seek any kind of legal representation. That is the main reason I sought legal advice immediately, anyone who advises you to defend yourself in any court wants to win easily.

To get help here you need to give a little more information. To quote from WhyChat's Information to Newcomers:

"Please give your State, the age of the account and the type of account, (credit card, car loan etc.)

"DO NOT post personal information such as your name, account #'s social security numbers, telephone numbers or your full address.

"To get information on abbreviations used, links to form letters, how to file a complaint with the FTC and other general information,go to this site

END QUOTE

There is a lot you can do if your debt has expired without hiring a lawyer. Read posts here and go back a few months.

If you do need a lawyer, the kind of lawyer you are looking for specializes in consumer law and/or bankruptcy.
