IF NFS owned the account at the time, all they agreed to was that THEY considered it "paid in full" for THEIR interest,(which they probably paid 10 cents on the $ for) .Now, IF they had just an assignment from Citibank, it would have given you some leverage, however, if that had been the case, Citibank would have "signed off" and you would have gotten a 1099C for the balance as income to you.
