I am an attorney in Minnesota and my client had "run-ins" with the same company. We still can't figure out whether they are legit or just total scam artists. What we do know is that you don't have to pay them a cent unless they send you a certified copy of the bad check. They won't do it because they don't have it. We wrote them and told them not to ever call my client again. We then harassed them for info regarding their state of incorporation, etc. They don't ever call my client now. They aren't even licensed to do this in Minnesota (and I doubt they are in Iowa, either). Good luck!
