You don't say what state you are in, and you will find it easiest to check the rep of a LOCAL organization.

Most of the legit, reliable organizations in my state (California) have been in business since the 1960s.

You can get better advice from the NFCC (National Foundation for Credit Counseling).

http://moneycentral.msn.com/articles/smartbuy/debt/8077.asp

has good solid info on the pros and cons of consolidation. And in my opinion recommends the best, most stable organization devoted to helping people. Article also has access to a calculator that lets you compare a plan being touted to you with something more common-sensical.

More good info at http://www.herdebt.com/ which has a worksheet and a plan for eliminating debt. Might not do you a lot of good right now, chrismc1, having collectors on your back -- but it is the very best PLAN I have ever seen for eliminating debt, for those of ya reading this who have a sincere interest in a whole new lifestyle. OR just, say, wiping out your credit card debt and saving for a home or something substantial that has a prayer of appreciating in value, before you get old and gray.
