Disputes with CRA'S

Goodness. I've read so many posts I've overloaded myself. Research on info for my own credit problems. I think I read somewhere that if a debt was paid to a CA but has not been updated on the credit report, it's best to dispute the item directly with the CRA first. That the CA's more than likely will not answer/verify because they've already been paid and won't bother. Is this accurate? Or should I just have the CA update to show account was paid (it was paid in full,no settlement)?
