I have been questioning myself, whether or not to dispute the validity of a debt. Perhaps you can help me decide. I have been trying to settle a financial matter with a creditor, who i strongly feel is wrong. I have been sending letters, several which have been certified, registered and signed for over the past 3 1/2 years; with no responds. My letters always ask for proof of debt and question why payments made to them are either missed or not credited to my previoius account. This is a medical facility, where i use to go; and the doctor refuses to cooperate. I told her she was in violation; her response was, "i don't care!" My last Correspondence to them was in Nov. 2000, my first was in Oct. 1998; not exactly 4 years. Thats not the issue. The issue is, haven't they violated my rights, by not responding to any of my letters? 5 letters were sent, unfortunately i only have receipts for the last 2. The last one indicated that i was no longer going to tolerate their avoidance on my letters and i was not going to give them another dime until they investigated and proved to me that i owed this debt of approx 250.00. Again no response! All they keep sending me is a bill, with a balance due.Maybe a hand writing sentence, that i need to pay or collections! I was going to seek an attorney; but lets face it, its going to cost. Here is the reason i am hesitating; my mother of 86 is seriously ill; so is my husband, back and forth to hospitals! Thats why i haven't dealt with this yet. Do i deal with now? i don't know if i can add anymore stress to my life. Should I just pay it; and forget about it? If i had the funds i'd let an attorney handle it! I need to decide by Sept 4th. I'd truly appreciate your imput, perhaps then i can decide. Also, can anyone tell me, if i decide to pay the debt will it stop them from placing it on my credit. I have checked my credit reports with all 3 agencies and there is nothing as of now; then again the new month is here and i will wait till Tuesday morning to check again. Cause if its on there, its too late, isn't it? Let me add, i have excellent credit and am a proud graduate of the original CCCS (United way) after 7 years; and to answer some of your questions about cleaning up your credit after being on the program? The answer is yes! Just ask! Please help me decide. At 2:30 AM i'm really loosing sleep over this. Thanks to all, i know you'll help. Sorry this is so long.
