I'm sure the answer to my question is posted somewhere on this board but I have to act quick on giving the collection attorney an answer. My e-husband and I bought a car 12 years ago. I di not have an income at the time the auto was purchased and my husband worked under the table so the car dealership finagled the paperwork. Anyway, the car was reposessed about 4 months later. This was in 1988. The car was auctioned and we were stuck with a $5000.00 (plus change) bill. We ignored the bill for years. We were divorced in 1994 and now this bill is back. It is now over $8000.00. I received a letter in the mail telling me that if I do not contact them or the courts I will have a wage garnishment against me. I live in NJ. My e-husband said he is not going to pay and of course he is still working under the table. I recenty bought a new car in February and I feel this is how the credit attorney tracked me down. My questions is: Should I call the credit attorney and negiotate to pay 1/2 of this balance due? I should not be held liable for the full amount. My ex should pay for half. Any advice at this point will be very helpful. Thank you in advance.
